A clear advantage to having a monarchy is "living memory" or institutional memory. Republics, particularly now, are often far too absorbed in the current moment without sufficient knowledge/ perspective on how and why the current moment arrived. I'm a bit shocked at how selective (spotty) their knowledge is on potentially existential crises like the war in Ukraine, as if all they need to know are the talking points. How I wish I were wrong.
In contrast, my sense is that the Queen had developed a set of skills beyond the skills most able heads of state have time to develop. She would have known just how to go about gathering support behind the scenes and turning around the current situation of looming catastrophic war.
When surprise factors like game-changing technologies or mental illness suddenly make the policies too risky (or self-sabotaging), we must be willing to change course.
In truth, Queen Elizabeth had a great advantage being female in that it kept her more insulated, respected from afar, less entangled with the power brokers. As with Queens Isabella and Elizabeth I, the configuration makes it easier to integrate new information and make the best decisions for the country going forward, apart from personal considerations.
I recall thinking something along these lines shortly before Queen Elizabeth rapidly deteriorated and passed on, a surprise to much of the world. She would not have let us go over the edge into unnecessary war, and I pray neither will today's key players.
