My poor brother has beautiful green eyes, so everywhere he went as a child people would compliment him and touch his eyes, which he hated, of course. If you feel jealous of someone's eyes, you will go blind since you didn't value your own perfectly good eyes, the superstition goes, but if you go up and compliment and touch whatever you are/were jealous of, it breaks the spell you are protected.
